BARRHEAD Specsavers is helping a group of local boxers pack an even bigger punch thanks to a new sponsorship deal.

Non-profit organisation Barrhead Boxing Club – which has been running for 43 years – recently moved from the town’s sports centre to its own premises in Cogan Street to keep up with demand.

The club has a large membership and was running at capacity in its former home, so was unable to take on new members.

As a result of the move, sponsorship is more important than ever to its team of volunteers and Specsavers’ £500 donation will go a long way towards helping to purchase new kit and meeting other costs.

Barrhead store director Gail Thompson recently attended a club open day where she was invited to meet members, gain an insight into the wide benefits which the club has had in the community across the last four decades, while understanding how the donation will be spent.

The club, renowned for its fitness with many members coming to develop fitness and lose weight, welcomes novice, intermediate and elite international boxers of all backgrounds.

Mark Breslin of Barrhead Boxing Club said: ‘We were delighted to have Gail along to meet some of our boxers and to see what we do.

“We welcome people of all backgrounds, cultures, and genders here, and believe the club is vital for providing structure, discipline, fitness and building self-esteem.

“We are very grateful for Specsavers’ sponsorship, and the donations of others, which are essential in helping us to continue that work, while providing equipment like boxing gloves, head guards and meeting running costs.”

“The club is a not-for-profit organisation and we hope that the wonderful support that we receive will help us to go from strength-to-strength."
