Niamh Junner continued her excellent form at the weekend with three medals at the Scottish Karate Governing Body Open Championships at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

With 38 associations representing nine countries, the Shitokai karate ace competed against participants from all over the UK and Ireland as she fought her way to two golds and a bronze. 

The 17-year-old, taking part in her fourth competition of 2019 after winning bronze medals in Austria and Poland and representing Scotland at the European U21 Championships in Denmark, looked in supreme form as she eased to her first gold medal of the weekend in the Female Junior Team Kumite.

Along with Shitokai teammates Amy MacDonald and Aimee Pollard, Niamh scooped gold in the team competition with a battling performance against Edinburgh-based Scottish Karate Federation before adding her second gold of the day with a resounding 5-0 win in the final of the U18 +59kg category - her fifth successive Scottish gold.

Niamh then rounded off her weekend with bronze in the Junior Kumite Open Weight competition.

Next up for the Barrhead ace is the British Karate Federation Four Nations championship this weekend at the Morningside Arena in Leicester before preparations begin for the World Karate Federation Youth League event in Umag, Croatia in July.

Elsewhere, Niamh will find out if she’s been named Young Person of the Year 2019 at the inaugural All About Barrhead Awards next Friday.

The Young Person of the Year award will be handed to the local person who demonstrates an energy, courage or drive to improve the community they live in.
