Neilston Wasps 2006 football team finished off their season in style with a football party at the Power League in Paisley followed by their annual awards ceremony.

The team of 35 boys and girls from Barrhead, Paisley and Neilston have just completed their final season of 7-a-side football in the Paisley, Johnstone and district youth football league.

Kenny Wilson, club secretary, said “It’s been a very successful year for our 06’s as we prepare to go to 11-a-side football, having already lost one player to Morton Pro-youth. Two of our boys, Calum and Martin, went on trial at Rangers and two of our girls, Caitlin and Eilidh, are currently turning out for Celtic and St Mirren girls respectively.

“Despite this, the club has managed to keep a strong core of players and we are confident both our 2006 11-a-side teams will have successful and enjoyable seasons in the years to come as our football becomes more competitive.”

Each player received a trophy to reward their efforts and the player of the year, players’ player of the year, merit awards and most improved trophies were also handed out for each of the three 7-a-side teams at the 2006 age group.

The big winners on the day for the Wasps team were player of the year-Connor Brown, players’ player-Fraser Crossan, merit award-Bo Hamilton and most improved Dylan Craig.

Wasp coach Stuart Hamilton added: “As usual it was a very difficult decision picking the individual winners as the whole team have all enjoyed an excellent season and we are all looking forward as a club to the next challenge of competitive football.”

2006 Reds winners were player of the year-Dean Wilson, players’ player-Calum Hendrie, merit award-Luca Hearton and most improved Sam Dock.

2006 Whites winners were player of the year-Steven Sands, players’ player-Calum Shearer, merit awards-Ben Mowat, Harry Neil and Owen Condon. Top goal scorer went to Jack Hoiles.

Whites coach David Condon added: “It has been a tremendous 12 months for our Whites squad who have gone from strength to strength and continue to improve on a weekly basis thanks to their great work ethic and their superb team spirit. It’s great to see all their hard work starting to pay off with positive results on the pitch”

Season 2018/19 will see Neilston Wasps provide football to over 200 kids between the ages of 5 and 14.

Club Chairman Andy Whiteford said: “The club continues to grow in size thanks to its hardworking volunteers.

“We aim to forge closer ties with Neilston Juniors next season and we hope that before too long we will be able to provide some exciting young players capable of challenging for places in the Juniors starting line-up.”
