Newton Mearns’ weightlifter Lisa Tobias lifted her way to a Scottish record at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last week.

The 28-year-old set a new record in the Clean and Jerk in the Women’s 48kg with an overall score of 139.

The gymnast turned weightlifter scored 60kg in the Snatch and 79kg in the Clean and Jerk.

Posting on social media site Instagram after her lifts, the East Ren weightlifter thanked her fans, coaches and Team Scotland.

She wrote: “8th in the Commonwealth and a new Scottish really is a dream come true!

“Massive thanks to my coach Gordon for taking every step of this journey alongside me and getting us here.

“Gutted you couldn’t be here but hope I made you proud. I can’t thank you enough - what a team!

“Thanks to everyone for all your support throughout this journey. It’s been the most incredible experience of my life and having my kids here cheering me on was just the icing on the cake (which I’ll be tucking into today!)

“Thanks to Ray, Neil and Kenny for coaching me on the day, the rest of the Scotland weightlifting team for cheering me on and finally thanks to Team Scotland for allowing me the privilege of representing my country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.”

The gold medal was taken by India’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu.
