WITH Arthurlie once again left frustrated by the postponement of Saturday’s tie at Maybole we take a look back at how the Barrhead side have fared in this week over the years.
18th: Arthurlie went down 3-0 to Ashfield in a League game at Dunterlie Park in 1933, but it was a better result the next time they played on February 18th in 1939 when they beat Blantyre Victoria by six goals to two at Barrhead in an Inter District league match. Whyte, Gillan and Paterson netted while Sim bagged a treble. Arthurlie: Murray, Bingham, Newman, Kirkwood, Gault, Whyte, Paterson, Shields, Sim, Gillan, and Kelly.
19th: There have been a few high scoring matches on this day, a 4-4 draw with Cambuslang Rangers in 1994, a 4-3 loss to Vale of Clyde in 1955, a 6-3 win over Bellshill Athletic in 1949 and a 5-3 win over Dunoon Athletic in 1972. In 2000 Renfrew were the visitors to Dunterlie Park in the third round of the West of Scotland Cup. Goals from Paul Green and Steven Quigg secured Arthurlie’s passage 2-1. Arthurlie: Cormack, Farrell, McInulty, Gillies, Gardiner, McArthur, Green, Melvin, Quigg, Fulton, and Ferguson. Subs: Creaney, McKenzie, Allison, Young, and McKee.
20th: Lanark United were the hosts in 1988 in a league match, where the three Ms – Millar, McCusker and McShane – all netted in a 3-2 win. Arthurlie: Marshall, Henderson, Russell, Young, Redburn, McCusker, Gardiner, Nugent, McShane, Ashcroft, and Millar. Subs: Gillies and McDonald.
21st: Glenafton Athletic were on the receiving end of a 5-0 hammering at Dunterlie Park in 2009, Joe Andrew grabbing three while Craig Malcolm hit a double. Arthurlie: Shaw, Lundie, Gallacher, McKeown, Higgins, Sharp, Johnston, McLay, Andrew, Winter, and Malcolm. Subs: Mclean, Williams, Kelly, Anderson, and Ardalany.
22nd: Pollok were the first round opponents in the Central League cup in 2003. Ex-Pollok favourite and later Arthurlie boss Robert Downs was on the score sheet at Newlandsfield Park as was St Anthony’s assistant manager David McKenzie as the Barrhead support in the large crowd at Newlandsfield Park enjoyed the day as their favourites edged through 2-1. Arthurlie: Cormack, Jack, Travers, Martin, McKeown, Ross, Ryan, Smith, Downs, Rae, and McKenzie. Subs: Hobbs. Robertson, O’Neil, Sommers, and Graham.
23rd: Another day with high scoring matches, a 6-1 defeat to Baillieston in 1980 and a and a 4-1 win over Yoker Athletic in 1946.
24th: In 2007 Arthurlie faced Petershill in a replayed game in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup. The sides met again at Newlandsfield Park, Shawland’s, as Petershill were in the process of moving to their new ground. And the Barrhead side made no mistake in the second game easing to a 5-1 victory that saw future Arthurlie player, Ryan Jordan receive three red cards, Hilland, Johnston, Andrew, and a double from Bradford accounting for Arthurlie’s goals.
Arthurlie are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Craigmark Burntonians in the West of Scotland Cup, kick-off 2pm.
