A set of tennis courts have been officially reopened following a £40,000 investment.
The facility in Barrhead’s Cowan Park has undergone extensive work to ensure viability for years to come, including resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, new nets and a new gate system.
The re-opening event on Friday, September 20 was attended by East Renfrewshire Council representatives, along with representatives from the LTA and the East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Trust (ERCL).
A total of 150 pupils from St John’s, Carlibar, Cross Arthurlie and Hillview primaries also enjoyed a tennis extravaganza, which was organised by Active Schools and Tennis Scotland, and led by trained sports leaders from Barrhead and St Luke’s High Schools.
Anthony McReavy, chief executive of the ERCL, said: “The refurbishment of the tennis courts in Cowan Park provides an opportunity for people in the Barrhead area to learn and play tennis on modern, high quality courts.
“The courts are a major enhancement to the sporting facilities in Cowan Park and the development of sport in the Barrhead area.”
The renovation project was funded by the UK Government and supported by the LTA Tennis Foundation.
As well as weekly Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions, with equipment provided, the refurbished courts will host local tennis coaching.
Children and adults can take part in coach-led sessions called ‘Tennis for Free’ which take place on Saturday mornings at 10am.
Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, added: “After months of hard work, we’re delighted to see park tennis courts in Barrhead are officially back open to the public, and in better shape than ever.
“Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis.
“Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come.”
