Former Eastwood Provost and Councillor Judith Edmondson has sadly passed away at the age of 91.

Judith held the Civic Head role at the previous Eastwood District Council between the years of 1984 and 1988.

She also served as the elected Scottish Conservative representative for the Giffnock West ward.

Mrs Edmondson spent her final years as a resident of Newton House Care Home in Newton Mearns and died on April 5.

Jackson Carlaw MSP for Eastwood said: “Judy was a ball of fun and brought a huge personality to the role of Provost at Eastwood District Council.

“Together with her husband, Peter they were quite the double act working closely with the local MP for East Renfrewshire, Allan Stewart particularly when local government reorganisation came in the mid-1990s.”

Judith was married for 65 years to the late W. Peter Edmondson OBE who previously chaired the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

Peter was also a dedicated locally-elected representative and for many years he served as a Strathclyde Regional Councillor before standing down in 1990.

“Peter and Judy played an important role to ensure the future of Eastwood within an East Renfrewshire Council outside and independent of Glasgow,” added the Scottish Conservative politician.

“Judy was practical, solutions-oriented and hardworking on behalf of her constituents.

“In her later years, Judy suffered ill health and loss of mobility but she remained positive and full of life.”

East Renfrewshire Provost Mary Montague also paid tribute to Judith.

She told the Barrhead News: "It was sad to learn of the passing of former local councillor, Judith Edmondson.

"As Provost of Eastwood District Council, which went before the creation of East Renfrewshire Council, she was a dedicated public servant and made her mark in local history.

"My thoughts are with her family at this sad time."

In further sad news, long-standing Scottish Conservative activist, Sheila Fulton also sadly lost her life on April 6.

Sheila was a senior party volunteer for decades and acted as the agent for many election candidates in Renfrewshire.

She also stood for the Paisley Southeast ward on Renfrewshire Council at the 2017 Local Government Elections.

Paying tribute to Sheila, Mr Carlaw said: “Sheila Fulton was for decades the life and soul of both the Party and the party.

“Blessed with an outstanding sense of humour, her personality alone it sometimes felt, kept many campaigns and candidates going.

“She was loyal and a rock and friend to so many.

“We are all thinking of her husband, Jack and her sons as they adjust to her loss, far too soon.”
