1. A first year Barrhead High pupil became a Scottish boxing champion at just 12 years old. Mya Peacock followed in the footsteps of her uncle after becoming the Scottish Schoolgirl Novice Champion for 2013 in just her second competitive tournament. Mya, a member of Barrhead Boxing Club for two years, had been inspired by her uncle Brian Peacock, who boasted an impressive trophy cabinet and was a three-time Scottish Senior Champion.
2. Snap happy winners of East Renfrewshire’s 12-hour Photomarathon 2013 were announced at Eastwood Park Theatre. Peter Smith proved his camera skills were top notch after coming first, finishing ahead of runner up Paula Donaghy, from Paisley and Derek Young, from Barrhead.
3. A dedicated coach who was known to devote up to 40 hours a week to the community landed himself a prestigious national award. Barrhead football coach, James O’Brien was named the Sportscotland Community Coach of the Year in recognition of his tireless work at Whitacres Community Academy. The 38-year-old built the multi-sports academy up from just a handful of children attending to more than 300 taking part in just over a year.
4. THE town fell silent as Barrhead remembered the fallen. The annual parade from the United Services Club on Paisley Road marked the beginning of the Remembrance ceremonies in the town, before more than 100 people gathered at the cenotaph to pay their respects.
5. Neilston Primary school was the latest primary in East Renfrewshire to get the cooking bus to come and park up at their building. Pupils cooked up healthy options like bruschetta, chickpea and beetroot salads, and fruit smoothies, with the help of on-board staff.
6. Hundreds of Barrhead youngsters pulled on their boots for a major school football festival. The Tesco Bank Football Challenge festival kicked off in Cowan Park and saw children from 11 various primary schools take part in some basic coaching and enjoy some game time.
