A BARRHEAD man has been banned from getting behind the wheel for 18 months after being caught driving while eight times the alcohol limit on a busy trunk road.

Mohammed Aslam, of Stormyland Way, gave a breath sample with a reading of 176 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath after being stopped on the A77 in Ayrshire.

The legal limit in Scotland is just 22 microgrammes.

The 31-year-old was caught on the dual carriageway near the Grassyards interchange in Kilmarnock on June 4.

Aslam was sentenced at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to drink-driving and driving without due care and attention.

The court was told he failed to maintain lane discipline, swerved into the other lane, drove at excessive speed, and repeatedly braked and accelerated harshly.

At the time of the offence, Aslam was the subject of an undertaking at Glasgow Sheriff Court for a separate case due to call later this year.

In addition to the driving ban, which will see him barred from holding or obtaining a licence until February 2025, Aslam was put on a 12-month community payback order with social work supervision and told he will have his movements electronically monitored for four weeks.
