East Renfrewshire Council is encouraging more residents to get on their bikes with the chance to win prizes along the way.

The local authority has joined up with the Love to Ride initiative which aims to get people to take up cycling for health, travel and leisure.

Those signing up through the Love to Ride website can track their bike miles, see their carbon savings, set goals, and find help and support to ride more often.

This support includes tips, articles and quick courses.

Councillor Danny Devlin, convener for environment and housing, said: “To join Love to Ride, it doesn't matter if you cycle every day or if you haven't been on a bike in years.

“There are so many benefits to be enjoyed from riding a bike, and Love to Ride is all about embracing each and every one of them.

“Whether that’s for your physical or mental health, reducing your carbon footprint by leaving the car at home or saving money by cutting down on transport costs.”

The Love to Ride online community is made up of more than half a million riders, including over 150,000 people who are new to cycling.

The project is funded by the Paths for All Smarter Choices, Smarter Places (SCSP) Local Authority Fund which supports Scottish local authorities to encourage more journeys by foot, bike and public transport.

Angus Rodney, partnerships manager at Love to Ride, added: "Love to Ride East Renfrewshire is all about getting people on their bikes and having fun.

“Whether you are new to cycling or an everyday commuter.

"Sign up today to receive local information, log trips and win prizes for taking part."
