East Renfrewshire is 'going green' faster than any other part of Britain, according to new research.

A study suggests that homeowners in the local area are more likely to have eco-friendly energy systems such as solar panels, biomass boilers, wind turbines and heat pumps.

Renewable energy firm BOXT analysed UK Government figures for each council area between 2020 and 2021 to reveal which have seen the greatest rise in installations.

It found a big surge in the number of people in East Renfrewshire prioritising green energy, with fittings up by 31% in 2021.

This was the highest percentage seen anywhere in the UK.

That year, there were 1,301 renewable energy devices installed in local homes – 309 more than in 2020.

Andrew Kerr, BOXT founder, told the Barrhead News: “We wanted to explore the rise of renewable energy solutions in the UK.

"East Renfrewshire prioritises renewable energy more than any other area.

"It is undeniable that having such installations in your home is an effective way to save money on energy bills in the long term.

"With electricity and gas bills remaining high across the country, many are turning to renewable sources of energy.

“It was not surprising that East Renfrewshire was the UK area with the largest increase in renewable energy installations between 2020 and 2021."

Experts at BOXT, which also supplies and fits electric car chargers, claim that making your home greener can increase the value of the property by up to 14%.

A total of eight Scottish council areas are in the UK's top 10 when it comes to increased installation of renewable energy devices.

Mr Kerr added: "Scots are adopting home renewable energy on a wider scale thanks to grants and loans from the Scottish Government for renewable energy installations."

The Scottish Government offers funding for up to 7% of the combined cost of the improvements, with a maximum grant amount of £7,500.

In the BOXT survey, Midlothian was placed second in the UK, with Conwy, in North Wales, claiming third place.
