Hordes of people, including an Olympian, laced up their trainers to take part in a major running event at an East Renfrewshire beauty spot.

Scottish long-distance runner Freya Ross, who competed in the marathon at the London 2012 Olympics, was the first female over the finish line in the 50k race at Run the Blades (RTB).

The 39-year-old finished the race in just under three hours and 51 minutes.

RTB, which was held from July 14 to July 16 at Whitelee Windfarm, is one of the largest trail running events in the UK and is unique to the location.

Accessible to runners of all fitness and experience levels, it incorporates three distances – a 10K, half marathon and 50K ultramarathon.

Organised by event management company Breaking Strain, new records were set in the 10k.

In a social media post, Whitelee Countryside Rangers, said: “What a weekend - that pretty much sums it up.

“We had a blast helping out Breaking Strain and their amazing Run the Blades event this weekend.

“Well done to all participants - let's do it again next year.”

Those taking part received a race medal and goody bag.

There was also “a vibrant” event village with music, a coffee van and food trucks.

A post on Run the Blades Facebook page added: “Utterly love the community that has built up around Run the Blades.”

The event welcomed previous winners, club runners, first time racers and young faces “including the youngest ever competitor - one year old - taking to the trails in the Junior RTB”, along with a buggy being pushed around the half marathon.

The post highlighted their involvement and praised the “incredible” volunteers and staff team involved, as well as the support of Whitelee Countryside Rangers.

There was “an awful lot of love”, “some tears” and “loads of smiles,” it added.

“Thanks to every one of you for making RTB such a special weekend for us (despite the weather).”
