A NUMBER of good causes will benefit after Barrhead hosted an event which encouraged people to consider voluntary work.
Organisers at the Community Hub East Renfrewshire were delighted by the turnout at their first Volunteer Fair, which took place at the Barrhead Foundry.
It was an opportunity for groups and organisations which provide vital services across the local area to recruit more helpers and network with each other.
Maria Hendry, volunteering lead, and Anna Kerr and Denise Smith, of the youth volunteering team, were the driving force behind the event, which was attended by the likes of Community Transport East Renfrewshire, Girl Guiding Scotland and Macmillan Cancer ER.
Also taking part were East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, Jewish Care Scotland, Kindness Buddies, Market Place, Newton Mearns Community Help Services and the Sporting Memories Foundation.
Maria said: “Many organisations offer vital services to local people and communities but need many more volunteers.
“The Community Hub East Renfrewshire volunteering team would like to say a warm thank you to all groups and organisations who attended and those who came along – and a final thanks to East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure for all their help on the day.”
One of the main aims of the fair was to focus on the volunteering roles available to local youngsters and highlight their capabilities and achievements.
Maria added: “We want to say a special thank you to young volunteers Iona, Sam and Heather who took an active role during the day, chatting to the members of the public and promoting volunteering.
“We want to highlight the achievements of Sam – one of our inspirational and highly-motivated young volunteers.
"Four years ago, he set up a volunteer-involving organisation – Newton Mearns Community Help Services – and has just received an Outstanding Achievement Award for Community Service.”
Another fair is being planned for Volunteers Week, which is at the start of June, with a venue still to be confirmed.
