Bosses at Neilston FC have been praised for supporting Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week.

The Farmer’s Boys took on Clydebank at the Brig O’Lea in a West of Scotland Football League Cup clash on March 18, with Down’s Syndrome Scotland (DSS) as match sponsor.

A bucket collection in aid of the charity took place ahead of kick-off, with Neilston making a commitment to match the funds raised through this.

Thanks to donations from both clubs, their supporters and the referee, £1,486 was raised.

Neilston spokesman Mark Duncan said: “The club is absolutely delighted to be affiliated with Down’s Syndrome Scotland and, as part of Neilston Community Sports Hub, we are committed to making sure everyone is included in as many activities within the community as possible.

“We were so pleased when the charity accepted our invitation to be part of what was a massive game for the club.”

Mascot for the game was 16-year-old Barrhead boy Ross Martin, who is a member of DSS and avid Neilston supporter.

He attends Isobel Mair School, in Newton Mearns, and proudly led the team out, along with captain Euan Clark.

Mark added: “Ross regularly joins us at Brig O’Lea, enjoying a pie whilst taking in a game.”

DSS, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, provides vital services to people with Down’s syndrome and their families across Scotland.

As well as offering advice and specialist support, it promotes awareness about the potential of people with the condition and addresses discrimination.

Andrea McIntyre, DSS fundraising manager, said: “We are delighted that Neilston chose to support Down’s Syndrome Scotland and take part in Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week, not only in their fundraising efforts but also by making young people with Down’s syndrome visible, valued and included members of our community.”
