A NEW service is being launched to help provide short breaks for carers in East Renfrewshire.

Volunteers will receive training to visit a cared-for person while their regular carer enjoys some respite.

The Community Hub at Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire (VAER) has worked closely with East Renfrewshire Carers Centre to develop the sitter service, which is funded through the Promoting Variety in Short Breaks programme.

Taking time out from caring responsibilities can give carers a much-needed break from the day-to-day routine and a chance to attend appointments, meet up with friends or join an activity.

Paulina Litynska, of VAER, said “We are excited to work with local carers to shape this new support.

“Carers have unique needs and experiences which we must understand to design a service that works for all.”

“Together, we hope to change how we think about short breaks in East Renfrewshire.”

Informal events for residents who care for a loved one will take place this month, with the first being held at the Dalmeny Park House Hotel, in Barrhead, on Tuesday, March 21, from 10am until noon.

It will be followed by sessions at the Uplawmoor Hotel on Wednesday, March 22, the Eglinton Arms Hotel, in Eaglesham, on Tuesday, March 28, and the Parklands Hotel, in Newton Mearns, on Wednesday, March 29, all of which run from noon until 2pm.

Breakfast or lunch will be provided and transport can be arranged.

Any carers who would like to attend should call 0141 876 9555 or email hello@va-er.org.uk.
