Volunteers are needed to spread some community spirit by becoming ‘kindness buddies.’

The new initiative has been launched by Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire (VAER) and the role involves supporting people in a flexible way.

As a kindness buddy, you might help someone with shopping, take them to a weekly club or provide support as they reintegrate with the community after a period of isolation.

The team behind the initiative were out and about last week, chatting with residents about spreading kindness and encouraging local people to volunteer.

This Friday, they will be at the Barrhead Foundry, from 11am to 1.30pm.

Claire Ramsay, who is leading the Choose Kindness project, said: “The team and I are very excited about our Kindness Buddy role. We believe it will provide a more flexible way for people to volunteer while still providing a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to people living in our community.

“We will support you through your volunteering journey. Whether you are looking to improve skills for employment or education, meet new people or fill your spare time, the team are here for you.”

Some people may need short-term support but others may require help for longer, with a plan being agreed with each volunteer at the outset.

Those taking part must be flexible, considerate, calm and kind, while a sense of humour will also be helpful.

Travel costs will be reimbursed and those who step forward should be able to travel easily, whether in their car or by public transport.

The role will also require a PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) check, which can be carried out free of charge.
