Motorists in East Renfrewshire who are aged 70 or over have been warned they must renew their driving licence every three years.

The reminder comes from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which has posted on social media to make motorists aware of the rule.

“After you turn 70, you need to renew your licence every 3 years,” the DVLA stated. “It’s easy, quick and secure to do it online.”

Motorists who fail to renew their licence after their 70th birthday will no longer be able to legally drive. If they continue to drive without renewing their licence, they will be committing an offence which can result in fines of up to £1,000.

Drivers over the age of 70 also have to renew their driving licence every three years.

Here’s how to renew it: Renewing your licence online is simple, you just need to visit the DVLA website here.

If you haven’t registered, all you’ll need to register is: an email address, addresses of where you’ve lived for the last three years, your National Insurance number (if you know it) and a valid UK passport number (if you want to change the photo on your licence).

After doing this, the DVLA will send you a confirmation email.

In terms of driving while the DVLA renews your licence, you can drive if you meet all of the following conditions: you have the support of your doctor to continue driving, you only drive under the conditions of the previous licence, your application is less than a year old, your last licence wasn’t revoked or refused for medical reasons, you are not currently disqualified and you weren’t disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after June 1, 2013.

After renewing your driving licence, the new one should arrive within one week if you do it online.

Another way to renew your licence is by applying by post using the D4SP application form.

The DVLA will automatically send you this form 90 days before your 70th birthday.

Or you can use the D1 application form for a driving licence. You can pick this up at most Post Offices.

After this your driving licence should arrive in three weeks. However, it might take longer if your medical or personal details need to be checked.
