Police have appealed for witnesses after a man crashed his car into a house in Barrhead.

The motorist was freed from his vehicle and rushed to hospital following the incident at the junction of Lowndes Street and Arthurlie Street at around 10.30am yesterday.

Officers sealed off the area for almost four hours, leading to tailbacks.

It is thought the driver may have taken ill at the wheel and then lost control of his car, which ended up in a garden, against the wall of the house.

One woman who contacted the Barrhead News said: "I didn't see what happened but the police were there, along with an ambulance and the fire brigade, so it looked like something serious.

"I could see that a dark-coloured car had gone off the road, into a garden and then came to a halt against one of the houses in Lowndes Street.

"I was trying to turn into Heys Street but it was sealed off by the police and they told me it was likely to stay that way for a few hours.

"I just hope that whoever was in the car isn't badly hurt."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 10.41am on Sunday, December 18, to reports of a road traffic collision in Barrhead.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene to make the area safe after a car collided with a building."

It is not known what, if any, damage was caused to the house.

A police spokesperson said: “The male driver of the vehicle was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

“The road was closed for around three hours and 40 minutes and recovery was arranged.

“Enquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing.”

Anyone who has information is asked to call officers on 101.
