A NUMBER of memorial events are to be held across East Renfrewshire to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Veterans, councillors, local dignitaries and residents will gather together at services in Barrhead, Neilston and Newton Mearns to pay their respects to the area’s war heroes.

The programme for the November 13 events has been arranged by East Renfrewshire Council and will begin at the war memorial beside Mearns Bowling Club, in Ayr Road, Newton Mearns, where a parade will muster by 10.40am before marching off from Fairweather Hall at 10.50am to reach the memorial for a service of remembrance at 11am.

In Neilston, a parade will assemble in Broadlie Road, beside Neilston Parish Church, at 11.45am before moving off to the war memorial adjacent to St Thomas’ Parish Church, in Main Street, for a short service and wreath-laying ceremony at around noon.

There will also be a service at the war memorial in Cowan Park, Barrhead, at 2.30pm.

Prior to this, a parade will muster at the United Services Club, in Paisley Road, no later than 1.50pm.

The parade will start at 2pm and march off to Cowan Park for the service.

Provost Mary Montague said: “Remembrance Sunday is our annual opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

“Events take place throughout East Renfrewshire on the second Sunday in November every year and it gives us all the chance to pay tribute to our Armed Forces and their families from Britain and the Commonwealth for their selfless contribution.

“The council will take part in a two-minute silence at 11am on Friday, November 11, and Sunday, November 13, whilst remembering those who fought in World War One and later conflicts.”
