Scottish Water has issued an urgent warning over 'callous' bogus callers.

The firm has advised customers, including the elderly and vulnerable, to make sure to verify the identity of employees or contractors visiting their homes to avoid falling victim to a scam.

If they feel "worried" by a caller, the public has been urged not to open their doors and to phone the police "straight away".

Barrhead News:

Peter Farrer, Scottish Water’s chief operating officer, said: "Our own workers are highly visible and unfortunately, there are occasionally people who take advantage of the essential work we do by posing as bogus water employees.

"All our employees, and anyone working on our behalf, carry photo ID which they will happily show on request, so don’t let anyone into your home until you are sure of their identity."

To remind customers of steps to follow when someone calls on behalf of Scottish Water, Mr Farrer has suggested learning the "three Cs": card, check and call.

First, ask for the employee's official ID before checking all of the details thoroughly.

Finally, call Scottish Water's customer helpline on 0800 0778778  to confirm the caller is genuine.
