Barrhead motorists are facing two weeks of misery after part of the town's Main Street closed for resurfacing.

The roadworks affect a busy stretch between the roundabout at Allan’s Corner and the junction at Church Road that leads to Asda.

East Renfrewshire Council has said the resurfacing is being carried out in two phases, with the first leading to the closure of the eastbound lanes.

This is due to remain in place until Friday, with traffic being diverted along Cross Arthurlie Street, Carlibar Road, Glen Street and Church Road.

Phase two is scheduled to take place from Monday, October 24, until Friday, October 28, with the westbound lanes closed to traffic from Church Road to Allan's Corner.

Drivers are being warned that the scheduled dates for closure may change, particularly if there are poor weather conditions that could affect or delay the roadworks.

Pedestrian access along both sides of the carriageway will remain available throughout.

A council spokesperson told the Barrhead News: “The works are being carried out in two phases.

“For phase one, the eastbound lanes of Main Street will be closed to traffic from Allan's Corner roundabout to Church Road. The diversion route is via Cross Arthurlie Street, Carlibar Road, Glen Street and Church Road.

“Our contractor hopes to complete this phase of the works on Friday, October 21, which would allow the eastbound road to reopen.

“The westbound lanes of Main Street will remain open and unaffected by this phase of the works.
