THE sky above Drumchapel will be lit up next month as Winterfest returns to the area after two years.

The annual event, which is a mainstay in the local calendar, will go ahead on November 5 at Drumchapel Park after it was unable to take place over the past few years due to Covid.

Those heading along to the sparkling evening will be treated to a huge fireworks display, musical performances and shows.

Councillor Paul Carey, who represents Drumchapel/Anniesland, told the Post that the event was launched 15 years ago to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area on Bonfire Night.

Cllr Carey said: "Drumchapel suffered terribly with rogue bonfires and fireworks, it was horrific.

"It was costing the fire service, police, and Glasgow City Council an absolute fortune.

"When we started it, the first couple of years were really tough but we managed it and the Winterfest developed to become the biggest community event outside of the display at Glasgow Green.

"People travel from all over including West Dunbartonshire, it's just amazing.

"It's also one of the busiest nights for the shops. They bring in so much money on that night compared to any others including Christmas.

"They open up late one night of the year because of the volume of traffic coming in."

The event begins at 5pm and will provide four hours of magic for the local community.

It has been described as a huge undertaking as it has to be coordinated with Glasgow Airport due to the flight path.

Concerns have however been raised over the number of people expected to turn up on the night following the announcement in September that Glasgow Green's bonfire display would not be going ahead for the third year in a row.
