East Renfrewshire has avoided further loss of life in latest weekly figures listing deaths from Covid-19 across Scotland.

The data, released by National Records of Scotland (NRS) and covering the week ending September 25, shows the total number of fatalities in the area since the pandemic began more than two years ago remains at 308.

Across Scotland as a whole, 16 of the 32 council areas had at least one fatality involving coronavirus last week as the death toll rose by 33, pushing the overall total up to 15,736.

Worst hit were Glasgow and Fife, each of which had four deaths.

The figures released by NRS cover all fatalities where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Meanwhile, data released by Public Health Scotland shows the number of people with coronavirus in hospitals across the country rose in the week to Sunday.

There were an average of 664 patients in hospital with Covid-19 in the week ending September 25 – an increase of more than 5% on the previous week.
