Students have slammed drivers blocking fire exits as an “accident waiting to happen”.

In a picture shared with the Glasgow Times, a car appears to be blocking emergency doors outside The Queen Margaret Union in the West End.

The hub, which is for University of Glasgow students, is used for live events and social gatherings.

Now some people fear it “isn’t safe”, especially for disabled people who struggle with mobility.

One student, who wants to remain anonymous, said: “I am anxious about the fact a lot of the university buildings in this area are allowing contractors, mostly work vans, to block their fire exits.

“I don't feel it is a safe place for students.

“I am concerned because I have walking difficulties and know how frightening it is to be last to get out if fire drills happen.

“I have a genuine fear that this is just an accident waiting to happen.

“I have reported this to the security team at the university who have basically said they would meet with me to discuss it, but this has been going on for weeks now.

"Still nothing is being done about those preventing users like myself with walking difficulties accessing the accessible ramps and disabled bays which are also blocked by inconsiderate contractors.”

A spokesperson for the University of Glasgow said: “We are committed to ensuring our campus is safe for pedestrians at all times. We are aware of a complaint about parking near the Queen Margaret Union building.

“There are ‘no parking’ signs in the location impacted, and our security teams continue to work to ensure this area remains safe, accessible and free from parked vehicles.”

Glasgow for City Council were also contacted for comment.

Police Scotland said it had no reports of illegal parking outside of the QMU.
