A WARNING has been issued about fraudsters cheating people who are selling items online.

Police said they have received a number of reports of such incidents, with members of the public left out of pocket.

Officers have issued advice on how to avoid being scammed in this way.

Tips include checking the buyer’s profile.

A police spokesperson said: “Look for activity, friends, where they are, reviews and any spelling mistakes in posts or their profile.”

Sellers are also advised to avoid sending goods via post unless they are satisfied they have received payment.

The spokesperson added: “Check with your own bank. Do not believe emails stating that the purchaser’s bank have transferred money.”

Those who plan to meet the purchaser in person should choose somewhere public, where they feel comfortable.

The spokesperson said: “If something doesn’t seem right or you are not sure about the buyer, then don’t provide any details or goods and report them to the relevant platform.”
