There was “not a dry eye in the room” as a Neilston singer treated members of a community club to a moving performance.

You, Me and A Cup of Tea, which is aimed at older members of the community and is run by Neilston Development Trust (NDT), welcomed Rebekah Johnstone (pictured) to their session at The Bank last week.

The 22-year-old, who has a first-class BA Honours degree in musical theatre from GAMTA, in Glasgow, sang old classics and popular songs from various musicals, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed singing along to.

Jennifer Carroll, the trust coordinator, told the Barrhead News: “Rebekah contacted us after seeing the sessions on our Facebook page and volunteered to come along and sing for the ladies.

“When the time came for her rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room.

“We all loved having her and will be taking her up on the offer to return again.”

Former Eastwood High pupil Rebekah will soon be heading up to Aviemore for a stint working at a hotel, but she can’t wait to come back and perform again for the group.

She said: “I am about to work away for a month performing so I thought it would be nice to do something in the village before I left.

“I can’t wait to do it again. I’ve been requested to sing some Adele next time.”

It is the latest in a series of varied experiences organised for the club which provides lunch every week and launched earlier this year with an afternoon tea.

It has been proving extremely popular and there is now a waiting list to join.

Jennifer added: “We are currently in the process of looking at how we can extend this programme beyond the 12 weeks we had originally secured funding for and how we can accommodate a larger number than we had anticipated.

“The number of enquiries to attend has blown us away.

“We are now running a waiting list and will keep each and everyone on it, up to date with available dates and places as they arise.

“We hope to be able to accommodate everyone who is interested in coming along, very soon.”
