Young footballers from Barrhead were feeling just champion at the weekend after clinching a league title.

The Barrhead YC 2009 Red Star team delivered an outstanding 8-1 victory against Finnart Blacks in a top-of-the-table clash to be crowned as Division Three champions in the Glasgow and District Youth Football League.

They were cheered on by proud parents and other locals who went along to enjoy Sunday's showdown, which took place on the astro pitch at Barrhead High School.

Brian Keay, head coach of the Barrhead 2009s, said: “As coaches, we could not be prouder of our boys.

"After losing the first game of the season these Red Star boys have shown great resilience, courage and determination and have went from strength to strength by putting in the hard work and truly deserve this victory, which is an inspiration to us all.

“Many thanks to Finnart Blacks for a tremendous game. They have been superb all season and showed great sportsmanship at the end, despite being disappointed, and Barrhead wish them the best of luck for next season.”

As a youth club at the heart of the community, Barrhead YC competes in both the Glasgow and East Renfrewshire leagues and has teams for children of all ages, including a girls' team, as well as a veterans' team.
