EAST Renfrewshire Council has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and promised to provide whatever humanitarian support it can.

Provost Jim Fletcher held a ceremony last week in which the Ukrainian flag was raised outside the council's Giffnock headquarters.

Councillors have also asked the local authority's chief executive to write to the Russian Consulate in Edinburgh to express their concerns over the attack on Ukraine.

A motion proposed by Provost Fletcher and passed unanimously by the council states: "East Renfrewshire is appalled at the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, noting that the waging of aggressive war is a criminal act under both international law and the Russian constitution.

"The council joins with the civilised world in condemning the actions of President Putin in initiating the war, which is taking an increasing toll on military personnel and non-combatant civilians alike.

"The council fully backs the UK Government, in partnership with other nations’ allies, in deploying measures aimed at ending the illegal Russian invasion and supporting the government and people of Ukraine in the defence of their country and the lives and liberties of their people.

"The council stands ready to assist in all appropriate ways with humanitarian support and refuge to the people of Ukraine in this ordeal.

"The council requests the chief executive to write to Audrey Yakovlev, council general of the Russian Federation in Scotland, conveying the council’s condemnation of the actions of his government."
