A NEW group has been launched in Barrhead to help women of all ages cope with life after lockdown.

It is the brainchild of local minister’s wife Fiona Trench, who feels there is nowhere for females to go at the moment if they want support from each other.

Members of the Women Together group enjoyed their first official meeting last Wednesday at the new St Andrew’s Church Community Hall, in Ralston Road.

They will continue to stage afternoon meetings at the same venue for two hours once a month, starting at 1pm.

Fiona, whose husband Ken is well known in the Barrhead community through his work with the East Renfrewshire Foodbank and as pastor at the town’s Spirit of Life Church, said: “The new group is a chance for women to get to know other women, particularly if they are going through a difficult time.

“We are basically providing an oasis or safe space in the middle of the community where females can find support and friendship.

“A lot of people were struggling mentally during lockdown, particularly the isolation part.

“We talk about keeping ourselves motivated and this group is open to all women of all ages, from young mothers to the elderly.”

Fiona launched the group with her friend Aileen Barron after Covid lockdowns highlighted that many women were in need of support.

She has been encouraged by the interest shown so far during trial gatherings, both online and in person.

Fiona added: “It initially started as a weekly Zoom get-together last summer and then we had a couple of face-to-face meetings.

“We realised the great need for a no-strings-attached official venue and location where women could meet more regularly.

“The event is completely free and ladies of ages will find a warm welcome, with home-made soup and refreshments available.

“Women Together’s goal is to be a space where they can share their concerns, experiences and find support, as well as hearing from those who have found the last two years to be a difficult time.

“It’s also just a great opportunity to enjoy some female company and laugh about the challenges ahead.”
