The return of a long-established singing group run by the East Renfrewshire branch of Alzheimer Scotland is music to the ears of organisers.

Musical Minds restarted at The Park Church, in Giffnock, last month after being put on hold for almost two years due to the Covid pandemic.

The group allows people from across East Renfrewshire who are living with memory problems, cognitive impairment or diagnosed dementia to join together with others in similar circumstances, along with their friends and family.

Sessions begin with a half-hour blether and cup of tea before an hour-long singalong led by musician Eddie Binnie.

Nicola Kennedy, a dementia advisor who runs the event, told the Barrhead News: “At our first session since lockdown, we had 14 people and a couple of volunteers as well.

A lot of regulars had made lots of connections and close friendships prior to lockdown. For many of them, it was about seeing familiar faces – people they have developed friendships with over the years.

“It was a delight to see everybody chatting again and reconnecting.”

The sessions take place on the first Tuesday of each month, from 1.30pm to 3pm, and new faces are welcome.

Nicola has stressed that you don’t need to have had a dementia diagnosis to attend. Those who are simply experiencing difficulties with their memory can join in.

“It’s just really good fun,” she added. “We know the science behind it, in terms of people living with dementia. Music can be really beneficial.

“It’s quite amazing to watch people coming into the session very quiet and reserved and then, by the end, you can see them blossom right in front of your eyes.

“If people are interested in coming along, I’d encourage them to get in touch and I can go over it in detail with them.”

There is a suggested donation of £5 to attend the sessions and, to ensure current Covid guidance is followed, it is necessary to book in advance.
