Nicola Sturgeon is due, later today, to give the latest update on the covid pandemic, the omicron variant and any decisions on the restrictions that are in place.
The First Minister will announce any decision on lifting the restrictions on large events, including football matches,in place until next Monday, and the recently imposed rules on table service on hospitality and the guidance on only meeting with people from two other households.
Since the last update, the time for self-isolation has been cut from ten to seven days, as long as it follows two daily negative lateral flow tests.
The requirement for pre boarding negative tests has been removed for people travelling into Scotland.
The First Minister will update MSPs in the Scottish Parliament this afternoon after a meeting of the cabinet in the morning to discuss the latest data and the restrictions.
Meanwhile, Humza Yousaf, Health Secretary, said the omicron wave has not yet peaked and urged anyone not yet given the booster or vaccinated to get the jag.
He said: “The recent acceleration of activity in response to the emerging threat of the Omicron variant has been a remarkable national endeavour and I can’t stress enough how grateful we are to all those involved.
“More than three million people have now received a booster or third dose, offering strengthened protection from the virus and reducing the risk of hospitalisation from the virus.
“We believe Omicron has not yet peaked, and the pressure being felt by the health and social care system is extremely high.
“So, to protect ourselves and the NHS at this critical time it is vital people complete the vaccination course for which they are eligible. It remains vital that everyone gets their booster vaccine.
Opposition MSPs are calling for certainty that all restrictions are based firmly on evidence.
Jackie Baillie, Labour, Health and Covid Recovery spokesperson, said: “Today is a chance to take a serious look at where we stand in suppressing this virus, and what the latest data is telling us.
“People and businesses need urgent answers – but too often the SNP have seemed more concerned with spin than facts.
“We need to make sure any and all restrictions are rooted firmly in the evidence, and backed up by proper financial support.”
Douglas Ross, Scottish Conservative leader, said: “The Scottish public need to see some light at the end of the tunnel, so it’s time for the First Minister to produce a timetable on the new strategic framework that she promised.
“People want reassurance that restrictions won’t stay in force for a moment longer than absolutely necessary.
“After almost two years of sacrifice, the public need to see a bold timetable from the Scottish Government that will enable us to live safely with Covid.”
