AN interactive game that encouraged people of all ages in Renfrewshire to get out and about has been declared a roaring success.

More than 6,000 local residents took part in Beat the Street Renfrewshire, collectively clocking up more than 53,000 active travel miles.

The six-week challenge took place in Johnstone, Elderslie, Kilbarchan, Linwood, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Howwood and Lochwinnoch, with participants invited to walk, cycle and wheel as far as possible, in return for prizes.

The game involved hovering a game card over special sensors, called Beat Boxes, fixed to lampposts, in order to score points.

Now the winners have been declared, with Fordbank Primary, in Johnstone, topping the leaderboard for most points collected by a school. They were followed by Houston Primary, Thorn Primary and Auchenlodment Primary.

The contest for most average points per player at local schools was won by Thorn Primary, with Fordbank Primary, Howwood Primary and Houston Primary all getting an honourable mention.

In the community and workplace category, the winner was Johnstone-based Active Communities.

Other prize winners included Riverbrae School, in Linwood, while organisers also made a £500 donation to the MND Scotland charity.

Beat the Street Renfrewshire was commissioned by Renfrewshire Council, in partnership with Renfrewshire Leisure, and funded by The Scottish Government’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme, administered by Paths for All.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, convener of Renfrewshire’s infrastructure, land and environment policy board, said: “Beat the Street has been fantastic for the area and we’d like to thank everyone who took part."
