Plans for festive fun in Neilston have been given a boost, thanks to a fundraiser who went that extra mile to coin in cash.

Anwar Rafiq generated more than £3,000 for the Neilston War Memorial Association (NWMA) by taking part in last month’s Kiltwalk.

The money will go towards Christmas celebrations in the village, including festive lights and a Santa run.

Matt Drennan, NWMA secretary, told the Barrhead News: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of villagers who supported Anwar’s outstanding efforts in completing the Kiltwalk.

“Our wee charity survives on the kindness of our supporters and we thank them all for this continued trust and support.”

Anwar’s training for the event paid off as he completed the 16.5-mile Mighty Stride from Glasgow Green to Dumbarton in three hours and 55 minutes – much quicker than he anticipated.

He also earned cheers along the way after documenting his journey on social media.

The total has capped a busy fundraising year for the 51-year-old dad, who also completed a virtual Kiltwalk in April as part of his efforts to help another good cause.

Anwar, who is a local Scout leader, chose that event to support Lapwing Lodge Outdoor Centre, on the Gleniffer Braes, which has been used by thousands of East Renfrewshire children over the years.

Reflecting on last month’s Kiltwalk, he said: “It was easier than I thought it would be because I had done a 17-mile walk from Irvine Harbour two weeks earlier to practice for it – and that took me four hours and 55 minutes.

“I’m overwhelmed by the amount of money people put in.

“A lot of local businesses donated. One got involved and then another after another and it kind of spiralled from there.

“I’m chuffed to bits and I can’t thank everyone enough.”
