A BARRHEAD slimming guru has coined in more than £450 for Macmillan Cancer Support by hosting a fundraising event.

Sarah McElroy, who runs three Slimming World groups in the town, served up coffee and cake, as well as staging a tombola and a raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses.

“I want to thank everyone for the amazing support and donations for a cause that is close to everyone’s hearts,” 42-year-old Sarah told the Barrhead News.

“I feel as though, over the past 18 months or so, cancer has been put on a backburner, due to Covid, and I have friends and relatives who have required Macmillan care.

“My gran needed care a few years back, so I’ve always tried to do something for the charity and to help with breast cancer as well.

“I was flabbergasted at the amount raised and completely overwhelmed by the amount of people who turned up.

“It was just a really good night.”

Among the prizes on offer was a hand massage donated by Temple Spa with Sarah McElroy – a business venture Sarah took on during lockdown.

The fundraising event was also a welcome opportunity for Slimming World members in Barrhead to socialise, after in-person classes had to be put on hold during the pandemic before being given the green light to resume in July.

Sarah added: “It’s made such a difference being back open. Weight losses are so much better now that we can actually sit physically together.

“In September, the groups lost an amazing 395lbs, which is more than 28 stone.

“Nothing is off limits at Slimming World and members have enjoyed an amazing month and are now looking forward to a slimmer Christmas and a happier new year.”

The Barrhead slimming groups take place at 5.30pm on Thursdays, 9.30am on Fridays and 8.30am on Saturdays.
