A SCULPTURE in an East Renfrewshire park is proving to be an unexpected hit with a new audience.

The artwork, called Are we here?, was created by Kevin Callaghan and has been installed at the Young Enterprise (YE) Scotland HQ in Rouken Glen Park, Giffnock.

Standing at a height of 4.6 metres and featuring geometric shapes that reach for the sky, it is part of a mission to create a new wave of public art across Britain.

The sculpture is one of three artworks that featured in the Landmark television series on Sky Arts this week as it broadcast the Scottish heat of a competition to find the artist who will create a landmark to go on display in Coventry, which is the 2021 UK City of Culture.

Mark Armstrong, YE Scotland’s head of operations, was instrumental in bringing Are we here? to the park through the organisation’s Adopt a Sculpture scheme.

He told the Barrhead News: “Kevin’s artwork generates conversations. It sparks an interest and you suddenly see these young people, many of whom will have never stepped inside an art gallery, trying to fathom what it means and why it’s there.”

Kevin, who is severely dyslexic, works out of The Glasgow Sculpture Studios and exhibits both nationally and internationally.

He said: “I’m delighted that Are we here? is proving such a hit for Young Enterprise Scotland.

“I set out to create a piece of art that would constantly catch your attention and leave you wondering. There is an infinity aspect to it and an energy source, so if the young people on site are questioning it, I feel that it is doing what I wanted to achieve.

“I was lucky, as I was supported even when I failed art at school. It’s great to see how YE Scotland is helping so many young people find their path by building confidence and skills such as communication and resilience.”
