SOME ghoulish new residents will be moving into Barrhead in the coming days as a fun event makes a spook-tacular return ahead of Hallowe’en.

The Big Barrhead Scarecrow Festival is back for a second year, after proving to be a monster hit with local families during the Covid lockdown in 2020.

Bosses at business improvement organisation All About Barrhead are encouraging residents to get involved and help turn the town into a “scarecrow wonderland.”

A spokesperson said: “We’re very excited to announce the return of our Scarecrow Festival, where we invite groups, businesses, families and individuals in Barrhead to design, create and display their very own scarecrow in their garden or window.

“All scarecrows entered into the contest will be photographed, with the public then invited to vote on their favourites to win top prizes.

“We had over 120 scarecrows entered last year, so expect even more this year – and we can’t wait to see what you come up with.”

The festival will begin this Saturday and continue until October 30.

Anyone who would like some straw to stuff their scarecrow with is advised to head along to Country Feeds Pet Supplies & Pet Parlour in Kelburn Street, Barrhead.

The top three scarecrows will win a cash prize for their creator.

Those who want to be in with a chance of winning must be included in the festival’s event map, which allows everyone to visit their design and potentially vote for it as their favourite.

The spokesperson added: “This year, once you have registered via the link, you will receive a poster that should be displayed alongside your creation for everyone to see.

“On your poster will be a place for you to write your scarecrow’s name and the person, business or group who designed it. Only scarecrows that have officially registered via the link will be eligible to be listed on the map and be in the running for one of the prizes.”
