POLICE officers will be issued with new identification cards in a bid to make it more difficult to pose as a cop.
Officers will be issued with cards that include better security features and clear, up-to-date photographs so that the public can trust that officers are genuine.
The card will include a Police Scotland logo, a hologram, and a signature from the Chief Constable Iain Livingstone. It is hoped that these new additions will make police ID badges harder to replicate.
Deputy Chief Constable Fiona Taylor said: “The onus is on policing to build and maintain the public confidence and consent critical to our legitimacy and our ability to keep our communities and citizens safe.
“Officers will always carry identification and will be happy to provide further reassurance about who they are and their reason for speaking with someone if requested, including through the new verification process introduced on 2 October.”
This comes after we reported that an enquiry is being launched into the “systematic failures” of the police which allowed Wayne Couzens to be a police officer and kidnap, rape and murder Sarah Everard while she was walking home from a friend's house in March this year.
The new cards are to be rolled out to cops in the coming months.
