BARRHEAD will play host to a busking festival this weekend in a bid to bring some buzz to the town centre.

A number of talented musicians have been signed up for the fun event, which is being organised by business improvement organisation All About Barrhead.

They will be performing outside the town’s Asda and Tesco stores, as well as in Cross Arthurlie Street, from noon until 4.30pm.

The line-up includes Erin Ponsonby, Jonny Kirwan, Marc James and Travelling Jukebox.
Andy Dunlop, of All About Barrhead, said: “We want to see a bit more happening in the town.

“Some of the musicians taking part in the Barrhead Busking Festival are local to East Renfrewshire and others are buskers we are aware of.

“With the nice weather we’re getting at the moment, hopefully it’ll encourage people to get out and we hope local businesses will also see a difference.”

The busking festival is being staged as a test event, with plans to organise other activities in the months ahead as the Covid vaccination programme is ramped up and lockdown restrictions are gradually eased.

Mr Dunlop added: “In July and August, we are hoping to run a four-week activity event that will include another busking festival, a small arts festival and activities for children.

“And, if things allow, we also hope to host a small comedy festival.

“The Barrhead Busking Festival is open to everyone but we are not encouraging any crowds. We want it to be very much Covid-safe.

“The idea behind the event is to bring a bit of fun and activity back to Barrhead and for the town to start feeling vibrant again.”
