AN East Renfrewshire beauty spot has become the go-to place for snap-happy young social media users.

Whitelee Windfarm is proving a real hit for teens and those in their early 20s who are keen to use the wind turbines as a stunning backdrop for their Instagram posts.

More than 13,000 people have tagged Europe’s largest onshore wind farm on the social media platform as they attempt to blow away their followers with impressive snaps.

Among that number is final year photography student Iain Gallacher, who also points to the area’s significance as a major green energy site as part of the draw for environmentally-conscious young people.

The 22-year-old student told the Barrhead News: “I have always been passionate about looking after the environment, so I extended this interest into my photographic work.

“The first time I saw a wind turbine, I was surprised by how large they were and how small I felt in comparison, but also by how quiet they were.

“Walking around such a large area, with more than 200 turbines, I felt hopeful for a future where we can collectively look after the environment and limit the impact we have on the planet.”

It is not, however, just members of Generation Z who have taken to the wind farm on Eaglesham Moor over the past year.

The site has experienced an influx of people of all ages during the pandemic as many head there for a daily walk.

Leah MacRae, who plays Ellie McLean in BBC TV soap River City, has told of the “peaceful” sparseness of its surroundings.

She has been enjoying walks at Whitelee at least once a week and recently took her grandmother there to watch a beautiful sunset.

“I will never forget the first time I went,” the actress said. “My husband was laughing because I was like a kid.”
