A CONSULTATION is being held to gain feedback on proposals to transform a derelict Barrhead landmark.

In September last year, Barrhead-based charity Include Me 2 Club was awarded a windfall to turn the Gatehouse Lodge, in the town’s Cowan Park, into a community café.

The proposed development also includes a workshop, office, meeting space, kitchen and public toilets.

In addition, there are plans to provide a bike hire facility, with storage and parking bays, as well as adding a new road to create better access.

The project was given a massive boost when it was handed £500,000 through the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) scheme.

Now East Renfrewshire Council is seeking representations from community councils, community bodies and any other interested party.

An initial public consultation took place in July 2019 to seek views from anyone living in or visiting East Renfrewshire and also from those attending Barrhead High School.

Those who took part were asked what they would most like to see the historic building being used for.

Out of 909 responses, almost 700 were in support of a café, with more than 50 calling for a social enterprise and around 30 backing either a café, social enterprise, community bike hub, nursery or visitor centre.

The closing date for representations in the latest consultation is May 10 and all feedback must be emailed to business@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk.
