AN East Renfrewshire park is to be given a major makeover.

The improvements at Fairweather Park, in Newton Mearns, will include a variety of new play equipment, including a climbing matrix, see-saws, trampolines and a roundabout suitable for wheelchair users.

After the green space was highlighted as an area for improvement, consultations took place with local schools, community groups and residents to give them the chance to have their say on how they wanted it to look and what facilities to include.

Funding comes from development contributions received by East Renfrewshire Council specifically for the provision of active open space in the area.

The development contributions policy allows funding to be sought from relevant planning proposals to mitigate the impact of new developments on local services and infrastructure.

Councillor Alan Lafferty, East Renfrewshire’s environment convener, said: “The upgrade planned for the park will create a fantastic play area for local residents and visitors to Newton Mearns.

“Throughout the past year, outdoor space has been hugely important to us all, providing us with somewhere to get fresh air and exercise, so I am delighted we are creating yet another high-quality facility for young people to enjoy.”

Work is due to get underway at the end of April and is expected to be completed within four weeks.
