AN East Renfrewshire firm has created a growing calendar to help green-fingered residents plan ahead this year.

It is the creation of Goody Foody Gardens, which installs small vegetable beds for those who would like to grow their own grub and then provides expert assistance to maintain them.

Business owner Laura Molloy knows growing your own produce can seem challenging but the calendar aims to help make the process easier by providing straightforward guidance about what to grow and when, so people get off to the best start as they look towards the spring.

She told the Barrhead News: “Nothing much grows during the winter but this is the time of year people start planning what they are going to grow, as some seeds might need germinating early.

“In late March/April time, you really want to hit the ground running and start planting little baby plants and seeds.

“People are often daunted by the thought of it, so we try to make everything really simple.

“Easy things to try are loose leaf green and red lettuce – the leaves can be picked as needed and will put an end to wilted bags of salad leaves from the supermarket.

“Radish is a very fast grower. You will start to harvest in as little as six weeks from sowing.

“Spinach is another fast grower and the leaves can be picked as required and will just keep on growing back.”

The company has gone from strength to strength since it was launched by mum-of-three Laura last April.

All of the big suppliers have been providing their catalogues and quite a few are saying they have sold out of some things, so there is definitely a huge interest in ‘grow your own’ – and this is the best time of year to start planning,” she added.
