East Renfrewshire Council is urging dog breeders to “say no to puppy dealers” by signing up to a new scheme.
The Scottish SPCA Assured Breeders Scheme, which is free, encourages the public to buy puppies that are healthy and that, together with their siblings and parents, have grown up in an environment that is clean, safe and has provided everything they need whilst meeting high animal welfare standards.
It’s open to anyone who breeds any type of dog, including those who are members of the Kennel Club Assured Breeders Scheme and those who require to be licensed by a local authority.
Those who sign up will get a welcome pack to give every new owner, which will help every puppy settle well into their new home.
A dedicated area on the website to register a litter also means members of the public will be able to view available puppies.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Responsible breeders will always happily provide health records and paperwork.
“Be aware of bogus inspectors trying to remove animals from homes.”
The new scheme has been introduced at a time when puppies are in growing demand as more people are spending time at home during lockdown.
