EMERGENCY repairs to fix a gas leak in Clarkston have now been completed.

Engineers were called to Busby Road after the alarm was raised on the afternoon of Thursday, January 7.

It is understood several businesses were evacuated after the leak was discovered.

The road remains closed northbound from the Tesco Express shop while the road surface continues to be restored.

A signed diversion is currently in place and the road is due to reopen by Wednesday morning.

Waseem Hanif, a spokesperson for gas network company SGN, said: "We're continuing emergency repairs to our gas network in Busby Road in the Clarkston area of Glasgow.

"To ensure everyone's safety while we carry out this work, we've temporarily closed Busby Road northbound at Tesco Express opposite Clarkston train station. A signed diversion is in place for northbound motorists via Ashfield Road, Daleview Drive, Sundale Avenue, Greenwood Road, Mearns Road, Benview Road and Clarkston Toll.

"Our engineers have made good progress and repairs to our gas network are now complete. Our teams are now working to restore the road surface as quickly as possible. A number of processes are involved in this and require a certain amount of time in between, for example, to allow concrete to harden to ensure the road is reinstated to the required specification. All going well, we hope to reopen the road as normal by Wednesday morning."
