The winners of a contest which encouraged people of all ages across East Renfrewshire to get and about have been presented with their prizes.

Almost 10,000 people took part in this year’s Beat the Street competition and walked, cycled, scooted, ran and wheeled more than 110,000 miles during the six-week event.

A number of ‘beat boxes’ were put in place across the local area, with points to be earned each time contestants swiped a smartcard at any of them.

Antonio Carlo, co-ordinator for Beat the Street East Renfrewshire, has now handed the winning residents, businesses, schools and community groups with vouchers for topping the total and average points leaderboards.

Pupils at the Isobel Mair School, in Newton Mearns, also won special recognition for their achievements.

Shauna Melvin, principal teacher at the school, said: “This year, our pupils were able to access the Beat the Street game at school, which allowed them to engage with the initiative all the more and was really motivating for them.

“They were delighted with the trophy and prizes and are already hoping the Beat the Street game will return.”

The Amazing Avengers team also lived up to their name and were presented with a total of £600 worth of vouchers from Decathlon for topping the community team leaderboard for total and average points.

Team captains Mamatha Aeddy and Sudhir Vusikala have spent the vouchers on sport gear so they can continue to be active.

Antonio said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many people outside, being active and enjoying themselves in our beautiful area.”

Beat the Street is commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council, in partnership with the Scottish Government and the Paths for All charity’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme.
