Police have issued an appeal for information as they investigate a robbery at a Barrhead supermarket last night.

The incident took place at the Lidl store, in Kelburn Street, at around 7.35pm.

Officers said a man went to the checkout area and pretended he was ready to pay for an item but then pounced once the cashier had opened the till.

He pushed the cashier out of the way before grabbing a three-figure sum of cash and running off towards Barnes Street.

The robber is described as white, in his 30s and around 5ft 9ins tall.

At the time, he was wearing a grey hooded Nike top with black shoulders, black jogging bottoms, brown Rigger-style work boots and a blue disposable face mask.

The cashier was unhurt but police said he has been left badly shaken.

Officers are urging anyone who has information to come forward.

Constable Robert Fox, of the Greater Glasgow Robbery Unit, told the Barrhead News: "Nobody was injured but the staff involved were understandably shaken.

"We would urge anyone who may have information about this incident to come forward as soon as possible.

"We would be particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man acting suspiciously around the area or in the supermarket on Tuesday evening.
