Building work has begun on 47 new council houses in Barrhead.

The luxury development in Balgraystone Road will include wheelchair adaptable flats and three and four bedroom houses.

East Renfrewshire Council have confirmed that construction is now successfully underway and the first tenants are expected to get their keys in June next year.

The local authority expects the entire 47 home development, which began in October, to be completed by December 2021.

The Balgraystone Road project is part of East Renfrewshire Council’s bid to build more than 300 homes for rent in the next four years.

This includes a separate development of 39 council houses in the Maidenhill area of Newton Mearns, which began in July.

All the homes currently under construction will be leased out by East Renfrewshire Council to local people.

This Balgraystone Road project is being delivered in partnership with Glasgow based building contractor and affordable homes experts CCG (Scotland).

Councillor Danny Devlin, convenor for Housing and Maintenance at East Renfrewshire Council, said: “I am delighted that in this most difficult of years, we have yet another house building project underway for the people of East Renfrewshire.

“This year has highlighted how important it is for people to have a safe place to call home, so I am pleased that it won’t be too long before we handover the keys to yet more high-quality homes for tenants and their families.”

Councillor Devlin say their current council house building initiative, started in 2018, has already provided homes to rent for more than 390 people.

He added:“Barrhead is very important to East Renfrewshire’s future plans and I look forward to seeing this site at Balgrayhill Road continue to develop and benefit residents for generations to come.”
