Stephanie Elliot is a Barrhead-based exercise and behaviour change specialist who uses the ‘PHAT’ (Positive, Healthy And Toned) approach to managing health and wellbeing safely.

IT’s no secret that people who exercise regularly have fewer health complications, better mobility and generally live a longer and better quality life.

And studies tell us that moderate exercise a couple of times a week can drastically reduce health risks such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

But what if you already have underlying health conditions or are recovering from a fall or an accident? How can you be sure that getting active won’t cause more harm than good?
Knowing you need to make changes is great but what if you have never been in a gym before or struggle with anxiety?

This is where the Live Active GP Referral Scheme comes in.

Did you know that NHS Scotland provides funding to East Renfrewshire Council to run a 12-month health improvement scheme, working under the guidance of an exercise specialist based in your local sports centre?

The scheme begins with a one-to-one consultation designed to help clients think about their lifestyle and develop their goals. We normally discuss barriers to exercise, such as childcare, family commitments or work.

Everyone has barriers and they are very different from person to person. This means the scheme will be tailored to your needs, fitness and mobility.

From here, we signpost you to a suitable level of activity that safely considers any diagnosis you might have and any medication you may be on.

Call your GP practice today to ask for a Live Active referral.

We need sign off from your GP, nurse or physio before we can train you safely and effectively.

You don’t need to have any medical conditions but you must be 16 or over and feel that you need support to improve your health or activity levels.
