SHOPPERS can provide a boost for pupils at an East Renfrewshire school...just by popping out for some groceries.

St Thomas’ Primary, in Neilston, has been selected for the next round of grants from the Co-op Local Community Fund.

But the amount of money the school receives will depend on the number of shoppers who name it as the worthy cause they would most like to support.

Through the Local Community Fund, Co-op members are able to generate money for good causes each time they buy selected Co-op products or services.

They get to choose which of a number of nominated organisations should benefit from a portion of each sale.

For every pound they spend, 2p goes to their nominated cause – and they also get 2p for themselves.

The cash raised for St Thomas’ Primary will be used to pay for outdoor equipment and waterproofs for the pupils.

Rosemarie O’Donnell, of St Thomas’ Primary Parent-Teacher Association, told the Barrhead News: “At a time when funds for community groups and charitable organisations are becoming more difficult to access, we’re incredibly grateful for this opportunity to make a real difference in Neilston.

“We’re raising funds to purchase outdoor equipment and waterproofs for the children, which will be used every day.

“It means the pupils can explore, build, have fun, use their team-working skills and enjoy the freedom of outdoor learning.

“Being outside will also benefit the children’s physical and mental wellbeing, especially after being stuck inside during lockdown.”

The funding programme will run until October 23 next year and, during this time, Co-op members will be able to select the school as their worthy cause by going online HERE.

Anyone who is not already a Co-op member but would like to support the school can sign up in their local store or online.
