CHILDREN at a Barrhead primary school are being offered counselling after a much-loved teacher died alongside her husband in a horror road crash.

David and Alison Campbell were travelling in a BMW that hit a crash barrier on the M8 motorway on Sunday and burst into flames.

Both were later declared dead at the scene.

Alison, 51, had been a teacher in Barrhead for more than 20 years and was well liked by children and colleagues alike.

Her death has left youngsters and staff at Hillview Primary heartbroken.

Melanie McGurren, the school’s acting headteacher, told the Barrhead News: “The whole school community is absolutely devastated at the loss of such a loved member of our Hillview family.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Alison and David at this extremely difficult time.

“Alison will be missed by everyone at Hillview Primary, where she was a valued and dedicated teacher for many years.”

David, 54, and Alison were in a white BMW1 series that collided with a crash barrier on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 motorway in Glasgow at around 2.40pm on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, near to Junction 17, at Charing Cross, but the car was well ablaze by the time they arrived.

Alison taught at Auchenback Primary for a number of years and was a valued member of staff by the time the school merged with Springhill Primary.

The combined school was known as Springhill and Auchenback Primary before it became Hillview Primary in 2017, with the new title chosen by pupils, parents and teachers after they decided the old moniker was too long.

An investigation into the fatal crash is continuing.

Sergeant John Bradford, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with David and Alison’s family at this sad time.

“Our investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this incident and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information that could assist with our enquires to get in touch.”
